Since the 1990s Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium/Odin Teatret has hosted and been responsible for various international theatre festivals amongst which the recurrent Odin Week Festival (presenting the different aspects of Odin Teatret’s work), Transit Festival (dedicated to the work of women in theatre), the Holstebro Festuge (involving the local community). From the 30th of January to the 4th of February 2019 the first NTL Theatre Festival and Meeting will be held at Odin Teatret, with workshops, work demonstrations, work-in-progress, performances and a symposium. The NTL Festival will present the work of some of the artists and groups that make up the autonomous and connected constellation of NTL long-time residents and co-productions. The 1st NTL Festival is open to 25 participants who can follow the whole programme and share time and experience with the NTL resident artists.
The NTL residents and co-productions make up the environment of a younger generation that has grown from the seeds sown in the wind by Odin Teatret. They understand theatre not only as performances in a traditional space, but as research, pedagogy, cultural incentive, networking, site specific events, involving different artistic languages, images, body, music and song as a means to create exchange and be a catalyst for contacts, relationships and collaborations within the social/cultural patchwork of the community.
The Festival is an occasion to share the NTL activities both within the NTL environment itself and with interested participants and spectators. It offers five days of intense diversity coloured by the common desire of learning from each other. The aim is to discover and discuss strategies to give inspiration and meaning to the multifaceted understanding of what theatre is for us who do it as well as for the spectators. Without forgetting the need to take position in the society we are part of.

CHRISTIAN LUDVIGSEN

 

Christian Ludvigsen was a pioneer in translating Ionesco and Beckett, of whom he became a friend. With great difficulty he managed to get these authors published and staged at the small theatre Fiolteatret, founded in 1961 by him and others in Copenhagen, consecrated to the presentation of new international and Danish dramaturgy.

In 1965, Christian Ludvigsen invited Odin Teatret’s first performance to Århus, where he taught at the University and he was decisive in Odin Teatret’s move from Oslo to Holstebro in June 1966. He immediately became its dramaturg until the late 1980s. He was a guide for Odin Teatret when they emigrated to Holstebro from Norway and ignored everything about Danish theatre and cultural life. Through his prestige and contacts with the Ministry of Culture and the cultural milieu, he succeeded in having the characteristics of a theatre laboratory recognised, something that in those days was completely incomprehensible.

He put Odin Teatret in contact with well-known authors such as Ole Sarvig and Peter Seeberg, both of whom wrote plays for Odin Teatret. As a professor of the Dramaturgy Department, that he had created with Tage Hind at Århus University, he introduced a practical teaching by equipping students with a replica of a black box theatre that Eugenio Barba and he had realised as the first example in Europe.

The close link and collaboration between the Dramaturgy Department and Odin Teatret was officialised as a centre of Arhus University in 2004 with the creation of the CTLS - Centre for Theatre Laboratory Studies, located at the premises of Odin Teatret.

His knowledge was a continuous inspiration for Eugenio Barba and for Odin Teatret’s veteran actors. His friendship was a fervid support until his death in January 2019. Odin Teatret owes him a lot.

Christian Ludvigsen’s commitment to explain and support the motivations and the practice of Odin Teatret’s ground-breaking activity as a laboratory in the mid-sixties is the subject of the Italian professor Franco Perrelli’s book: Bricks to Build a Theatre Laboratory.
